Periodontology

What do you need to know about the Periodontics service?

This is the field of dentistry dealing with the treatment of inflammatory diseases that destroy the structures surrounding the teeth, the gums and bone. Unfortunately, this disease is as common as caries and its the reason is often caused by incorrect oral cavity hygiene. The main cause of periodontal disease is the bacterial agent found in plaque (soft coating on the teeth). Bacteria initiate an inflammatory process, which results in the slow destruction of tissues around the tooth. There is a gradual loss of bones and gums. The development and progression of the disease are also influenced by: genetic conditions, systemic diseases (diabetes, osteoporosis), environmental factors (stress, smoking) malocclusion and iatrogenic errors (overhanging fillings, improperly made restorations).

Periodontitis is often very secretive and insidious, and the only symptom of the disease may be bleeding from the gums, eg during brushing. Other symptoms are: redness and / or soreness of the gums, plaque and tartar, unpleasant smell from the mouth, in advanced cases, tooth mobility. To diagnose it as soon as possible it is extremely important for optimal treatment and inhibition of the disease. Periodontal disease affects about 80% of the adult population. Effective control of periodontal disease is possible only through a combination of preventive measures (optimal oral hygiene) and treatment.
